 This picture shows Nixon with several tools used to tap phones so that he can listen in on other peoples conversations. The caption on the bottom says "He says he's from the phone company..." which is being said by a democrat. This satirizes the Watergate Scandal, pointing out how obvious it was that Nixon was tapping wires. This suggests that America should be more careful about the president running it, and that the American people should limit the presidents power.

Interview with James Baxter

When were you born?
May 23rd 1955.

Was the school you went to in 1962 segregated?
Yes, I went to an all white school.

What is your opinion on segregation?
I believe that it was beneficial to keep the whites separate from the blacks. It helped each group to learn at the pace best suited for their race.

Why is it beneficial to have segregated public facilities such as restaurants and drinking fountains?
It was necessary to keep us separate from them because they needed to be reminded of their social standing.

What did you think of the Watergate Scandal?
Well, at the time, I was in high school and I didn't involve myself in politics very much. Nixon wasn't very popular with my crowd, but the Watergate scandal did grab my attention. It made my family and I scared; we didn't know if we could trust the government anymore.

What did you think of the increasing price of gas?
I was very angry with that. I was just about to go to college when they started to go up and I desperately in need of my car to get there. I was living California and I was accepted to Ohio State University.

What were your thoughts of the War in Vietnam?
It was going on from my birth untill I was in college, and I didn't really understand what the war was about. I thought that the loss of the lives of all our soldiers were for a good cause, I really did want to believe they were. But, there was nothing saying that their deaths were going towards any cause whatsoever. The war, looking back, just seemed meaningless.

1962-1975

This period of time was one of inner conflict for America. The war in Vietnam split the country in two, to a degree not seen since the civil war. The students of America rose up and called for reform. These students protested for unrestricted free speech, desegregation, and withdrawal from the war in Vietnam. The presidents (Lyndon B. Johnson and John F. Kennedy) worked to improve American society. These presidents called on Americans to aid them in "the fight against tyranny, poverty, and disease." While the presidents were attempting to create the ideal culture, the students were fighting it through their anti- culture. These conflicts are what characterize the period of time between 1962 and 1975.
